Charlottesville, VA… July 2, 2026… Progress continues on the new 6.5-mile, 36″ raw water line, which will eventually connect two local reservoirs. Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority’s (RWSA) contractor, Garney Companies, Inc., is making forward movement along Woodburn Road, having laid nearly 2,500 feet of pipe. When complete, the new water line will have the capacity to transfer up to 25 million gallons of water per day, leveraging the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir’s extensive watershed and the Ragged Mountain Reservoir’s large storage capacity.

The project has been broken into six different segments. Construction began in early March, with the bulk of the pipe installation to finish by 2028.

Additional Construction Crew to Mobilize

Beginning next week, a crew will mobilize to Colthurst Drive. Initial efforts will focus on moving supplies and materials to a staging area south of the neighborhood. Residents and visitors in the area may notice paint markings on roadways, pavement saw cutting, and test pitting. Pipe installation is expected to begin on Monday, July 20.

General working hours are scheduled Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 5 PM. Pipe installation efforts will begin just south of the Barracks Road and Colthurst Drive intersection and work their way south. Two-way alternating traffic will be maintained with active flagging operations during working hours. In mid to late September, night work is planned for the crossing at Barracks Road.
