Before shovels hit the ground, have your utilities marked!
It’s free and it’s the law.

After submitting a request, utility owners have three business days to mark their utilities, beginning the day the request was made. Excavation work may begin on the fourth day at 7:00 AM.
What is Virginia 811?
Virginia 811 is a nonprofit organization established by Virginia utilities to protect underground infrastructure. It provides a free central contact point for homeowners and contractors to request utility locates before starting any work that disturbs the ground.
Why is it important?
Knowing the location of underground utilities is essential for both safety and infrastructure protection. Accidentally disturbing a high-voltage electrical line, gas pipe, or high-pressure water pipe can seriously endanger nearby workers, damage property, and disrupt services for the people who rely on them. Before starting a project that involves digging or driving anything into the ground, contact Virginia 811.
When should you reach out?
To give utility owners enough time to mark existing infrastructure, Virginia 811 asks individuals to contact them at least three business days before work begins. Both the call and the markings are free.
How to submit a request?
To submit a request, visit va811.com or call 811. Be ready to provide the property address and the specific area where work will take place. Homeowners and contractors can help utilities identify the work area by marking it with white flags or paint.
What happens after submitting a request?
After receiving your request, Virginia 811 will notify all utility providers in the area of the planned work. Each provider will visit the property to mark its underground utilities. This process typically takes three business days. Once all utilities have been marked, Virginia 811 will send an email confirming that the utilities in the area have been marked. Upon receiving this email, the homeowner or contractor may begin the excavation work.
